In high school I was beyond cynical when it came to Valentine’s Day. I guess that goes along with the territory of being a social deviant. A single social deviant I should add. But today, while I completely recognized how completely artificial it all is, I have a little tinge of affection for February 14th. It stems from university and being in a long-distance relationship. Valentine’s Day, though just another day of the year, usually fell during either Carleton or OCAD’s reading week, making it one of the few times a year where Jordan and I could see one another, instead of just spending hours on the phone. And this year it is doubly as wonderful, because it is a Valentine’s Day that almost never was. So forget the cheesy cards, and the chocolate and the flowers that will wilt away. Tonight is an excuse to drink a lot of wine, listen to some beautiful music, and make a delicious meal.
Hell, this would have been one heck of a bitter, very different post, if my love life didn’t sort itself out the way it has.
