Guardian Unlimited | Fairytale of hypocrites

Guardian Unlimited Fairytale of hypocrites

I won't post any of this article, because of the use of quite a bit of slang that I don't want associated with my blog, but it is worth reading. It's no secret that Fairy Tale in New York by the Pogues (as posted below) is one of my favourite Christmas songs, but the homophobic and sexist slander in it of course has never sat right with me. It seems that it didn't sit right with the BBC either.

I adore this song, and I hate censorship, but I think the BBC may have been right. If the song used racially derogatory slang, it would have been censored years ago. So, why should this be any different? Should public radio be full of censorship? Of course not. But I think that it does have an obligation to be inclusive to the greatest amount of listeners possible.

Well, I'm going to listen to this song, because it is catchy, and has been holiday tradition for many years. A guilty pleasure at best, in which makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable for enjoying.

In other news, Bill Murray night was a success, though I fell asleep during Caddyshack (Movie #3). I started and finished all my Christmas shopping this weekend, and even squeezed in a bit of time for baking (photos to follow!) and Jenni and I are making Christmas dinner tomorrow for the first time. It's my dad's birthday today, so before I can even start to wrap my Christmas gifts I have to wrap his birthday gift. I love the holidays! And I love when the CBC plays It's A Wonderful Life. For some reason it's better than watching the DVD. Oh, and I bought It's A Wonderful Life as a $20.00 gift for an exchange at the Rose family Christmas, and they've colourized it. Who in the heck would WANT to watch It's A Wonderful Life colourized. If you do, you're a sick, sick person!

Happy Holidays!
