Sometimes we get to thinkin' of the past

Yesterday, I was at a reception following a funeral. Oddly enough, I walked in to the Legion to see about half a dozen family members who I had never seen before gathered around the bar making their own Caesars. It seems as though some things are in the genes. Funerals are odd things. We gather with distant relatives, knowing that somewhere along the family tree we shared ancestors, yet we barely know one another exist and it is unlikely that we'll ever cross paths again.

As per usual, I've been quite reminiscent as of late, this time trying to piece together the blank spaces of my genealogy, which I'll admit are many! A few years ago, my grandma's side of the family met for a reunion in Kingston, so the work has already been started for me. It's amazing to live in a day and age where you can plug a long-dead relative's name into a search engine and find his signature scrawled across war documents or land deeds. Apparently we even have a family plot in a small town near Kingston called Odessa.

It's been awhile since I've made the time to blog. I've been keeping busy, that's for sure. I saw the wonderful Jessica Valenti speak a few weeks back at the Camera Gallery in Toronto. Founder of Feministing.com, she has also written a number of books. I can now even say that I've joked around with Jessica Valenti about how wonderful Jem and the Holograms are/were. Very, very cool night. We should have some video of the event up on rabbleTV very shortly.
